Using Color in Home Staging: RESA Takeaways

By Taylor Atkinson, Co-owner of Atwil Design

As many of you may know, I have been an active member of my local chapter of the Real Estate Staging Association (RESA) since starting my home staging company in 2016. I have served the local board for four years now, starting as Vice President, President, Secretary, and this year serving as our Social Media chair.

RESA has so much to offer for the growth and accountability of a stager. Both nationally and locally, RESA has enriched my business in copious ways.

RESA has been resilient through this pandemic by finding ways to stay connected while keeping safely apart. Our local board has taken on the task of finding ways to make our now virtual meetings engaging.

This Month’s Guest Speaker

This month, we had color expert Kristie Barnett, who is the Psychological Color Expert, give a webinar to the group. Kristie dove deep into the psychology of color and color placement. It was incredibly fascinating! I learned the do’s & don’ts of color, simple tricks to save time and money while still getting a sophisticated look, and also statistics of preferred colors. Today, I want to share a few key takeaways that will help you sell your home.

Visceral Reaction & Color in Home Staging

Kristie talked about visceral reaction in home staging. A “visceral reaction” is an instinctive, gut reaction to a stimulus or experience. Guess what is key to visceral reactions? You guessed it: color.

Did you know 90% of decision making is based on color? Color is subconsciously noticed before design, text and shape. That is because color creates a feeling, which turns into a memory.

Muted Neutrals

If you want to be on-trend in 2020, you have to choose muted neutrals in your color scheme. Muted neutrals are the hot item right now, especially when paired with high-contrast and dark-toned accents. Think of all the black accents that are “in” right now, elevating a simple space to architectural and sophisticated.

Kristie has a wealth of knowledge to give. She is a full-time color expert and consultant who teaches online certification courses to help home stagers like us. Who do you think signed up to be a color expert? That’s right, Atwil Design!

Interested in Becoming a RESA Member?

RESA is a fantastic national organization that enriches and aids stagers to be the best they can be. If we weren’t RESA members, we may have never been introduced to Kristie. We may never have had this opportunity to enrich our staff to better help our clients.

With monthly webinars, quarterly events, and an annual national convention, RESA is committed to continuing education for stagers. I am proud to serve on my local chapter and be a leader in our local Seattle staging community. I am also a huge nerd who loves to learn and constantly enrich my understanding so that I can provide a more valuable service to my clients.
